A little progress

I've added the stems and leaves to the second Iris quilt using fabric paint. I wanted the leaves to be quite swordlike and dark.

They've been painted in indigo with touches of aubergine but I shall add the shadows that would naturally fall beneath the buds and flowers, and where the leaves overlap each other, with a sepia pencil and wash.

You can see how I've started to shade the base of the flower with the pencil here. I think it will look OK on top of the metallic paint. I'm aiming for the effect of gold leaf that you see in a lot of tradition Japanese art. It was such a gloomy day today and the time just evaporated - by the time I got into my workroom the light wasn't good enough to carry on but I shall hope for better conditions tomorrow.

How are you all doing? Hope you're all making progress too!
Linda

  1. Hi Mom,
The painting on the iris quilt is looking good. I've dismantled the birdcage skirt. Was there more of that parchment colour hand dye fabric that we made it from? If so, I want it, I have a plan!

  2. Hi Laura,

I'm fairly certain I can lay my hands on more of that fabric. It's in one of my plastic crates - finding it should only take a day or two!!

Have you got the new fabric on the printer yet? I'm going to need your help with the image but I've got all the bits now!

  3. That's good news. A skirt still looks like a skirt when it's taken apart so I need to chop it about a bit and add some extra sections to give it a new life. I reckon I need at least a metre. I'll help you wade through the crates next week if you like. The moth photos on your blog look amazing!

  4. Aha - you've spotted the moths have you? They're part of the plot for the printing I want you to do for me! Do you think the resolution will be OK?

  5. Hi Mom,

They look perfect. You'll have to decide if you're going to keep them natural coloured, or give them a bit of ooomph.

  6. I love those iris Linda - and especially that gold leaf ... just gorgeous and very oriental feeling. It has reminded me that I have some gold leaf somewhere ... I must hunt it down and have a go. Also made me think about gold thread embroidery - also often seen on Kimono ... that could be quite fun too. Then again, I've just remembered spending over 100 hours hand quilting a very small piece of patchwork (about 12 x 16") in a golden trailing vine and leaves, for a piece I made for C+G .... it just about finsihed me off. But it was very beautiful ... will do some more thinking. I'm so pleased Laura does call you Mom on occasions - enjoy the crtaes you two - Hilary x

  7. I am in awe of your beautiful Iris quilt. I came up on google images while I was searching for a painting that I wanted. Do you sell your quilts?
My mother's name was Iris. She had a quilting loom, supplies and many little pieces of quilts that she had started when she passed away last year. I wanted to do my bedroom around this one painting called "Iris Quilt."
I would love to purchase a quilt....Yours is beautiful!

  8. Hi Amy. I only just spotted your question. Sorry not to have answered before! Yes, I do sell my quilts but this one isn't finished yet. I have 3 Iris quilts in various stages of completion. They are intended for an exhibition in September but could be available after that. If you are still interested maybe you'd like to email me at linda@lindakemshall.com
